One Vote

We’re in the final stretch now of the longest election campaign since the 1800s.  Thank goodness many will say.  Who do YOU normally vote for?  The party?  The best leader?  The best local candidate?  Who you think will win?  The underdog?  Regardless, please vote.  Every vote counts.  Four MPs were elected last time by under 50 votes.  Here in British Columbia there is a famous story of one such close election.  MLA Frank Calder had represented the extremely remote northern Atlin riding for 26 years.  The first First Nations MLA in Canada.  Seeking his 10th term.  An easy win.  History records two differing tales.  One, he voted by absentee ballot but forgot to sign the ballot envelope and thus was disqualified.  The other, due to bad weather, he didn’t reach the voting station at all.  Regardless of which is true, the end result’s the same.  26 years in office.  Nine terms.  Election night.  Beat by one vote.  One vote.  Please vote.  October 19.
